Too rushed.... The Advanced Course is a step up in terms of difficulty and the interaction between the tutor and students.
CD1 begins with a welcome and fairly gentle canter over familiar ground, revising the Foundation Course for twenty minutes, or so. At long last, the "familiar you" is introduced.
We then move onto more detailed grammar and cover a case or two. And that's it! The other cases not covered or even mentioned!
The dreaded Russian "aspects" are gone through but poorly and confusingly. Natasha's explanation is muddled and far too brief. Neither I nor the two on-CD students were any the wiser after this section. As aspects are vitally important in Russian grammar, this constitutes a serious -well, fatal, really - flaw in this course.
Far more grammar is taught than in the Foundation Course. This is, of course, excellent. Sadly, too much of it is crammed into the final two CDs, with CD 4 bursting at the seams.
An 8-CD set, with more time devoted to "aspects", other cases and a more relaxed tempo would make this a 5-star course. But, as it stands it is too top heavy, aspects are mishandled, and one or two cases out of five is woefully insufficient.
The vocabulary course is next. Wish me luck! |
